General Announcements
NECC 2008 Conference Call for Proposals:
With a successful 2007 NECC conference behind us, planning has begun
for the 2008 conference to be held in June in San Antonio, TX.
Together, iEARN teachers and staff conducted several workshops and we
hope to replicate this and more for 2008. NECC is a wonderful
opportunity to share your students' work with fellow educators. It not
only provides teachers with a stage to showcase their use of technology
in the classroom, but also provides a venue to highlight their best
practices using iEARN online collaborative projects and tools.
We encourage teachers
to submit proposals early. If you plan to submit and present your
student showcases, or plan to simply attend the conference, or would
like be part of an iEARN presentation please contact Diane Midness - Professional Development Coordinator. We're happy to assist you with any questions when submitting your proposal.
For more NECC details and how to submit, please click HERE.
2008 Global Action Awards: Mercy Corps Global Action Awards honor U.S. high school students who have led a project that had a direct, positive impact on people in developing countries and that raised awareness about global poverty. U.S. high school students and recent graduates can apply today. All materials are due by January 31, 2008.
Teachers Needed to Pilot "TeachUNICEF" Lessons: The US Fund for UNICEF is looking for US teachers, grades 6-12, to participate in the pilot of its new "TeachUNICEF" lessons plans - either by trying out the lessons in their classes, being part of a "control group", or both! Piloting teachers will be asked to give a short pre-test to ONE class, carry out the lessons, give a short post-test, and complete an online teacher evaluation form by Nov. 21, 2007. Topics include children and armed conflict, poverty, child labor, and the Millennium Development Goals. Lessons are aligned to national standards, and include maps, statistical tables, and streaming videos. "Control group" teachers will give a short (6 questions) pre- and posttest to ONE class of students, one week apart, without teaching the lessons. The control group enables us to document changes in knowledge between students who have and have not used the lessons.
For more detailed information, contact Susan Fountain, Evaluation Outreach, US Fund for UNICEF, 845-485-3266. Please indicate if you are interested in piloting, in the control group, or both.
