teachers in each 9-week course. Facilitators live in 15 different countries!
The International Education Teacher Development Model is
now available online for teachers. In collaboration with
iEARN-USA, the US Department of Education and The Friendship through
Learning Project Kristi Rennebohm Franz provides teachers with a
detailed report about international education in the classroom.
The well formatted report introduces global learning to schools, offers
integration tips, how to work with your students, and much more.

iEARN in the News
The Washington Association of Foreign Language Teachers (WAFLT) has selected iEARN-USA as the recipient of the Creative Innovation Certificate! This certificate is presented to a person or persons who have developed and used innovative methods of teaching
in the world language classroom. This could include creative means for
teaching second language conversation, inventive ideas for instructing
students in culture and multi-cultural awareness, or
new and effective methods for developing second language reading and
writing skills. iEARN connects K-12 classes among 115 countries
to enable students to collaborate on educational projects in 32
languages.
The award will be presented at the World Languages Conference in
Spokane, WA October 13-15, 2005. If you are a language teacher
and would like to know how students can work online with native
speakers in educational projects, contact: Christine Robinson at crobinson@us.iearn.org.
BBC interviews iEARN student - YouthCaN student and
iEARN intern, Nuria Peguero, was interviewed by BBC radio for a live
broadcast that aired on Septmeber 19th. The interview focused on
the positive impact of exchange program and global learning.
Nuria shared,
"I think Travel can really lead to
world peace. What iEARN, AYUSA, U.S. department of cultural affairs
have done, is pure evidence that travel can bring about peace. ...To
learn how to live how others live, perhaps talk how others talk... I
think that the governments of the world should adopt this process of
exchanges. Especially presenting this opportunity to young students, so
that they can be a step ahead."

iEARN Collaborative Projects
Over 200 Yemini Teachers Join iEARN's Global Network - iEARN
welcomed more than 200 teachers from Yemen to its international
community of educators this month. Secondary school teachers from five
public schools each in Sana'a and Aden participated in a training
program to integrate online curriculum-based learning in their classes.
The training was part of a dot-EDU initiative that aims to use the
Internet to connect Yemeni schools with their peers in the region and
the US. The program is funded by USAID and administered by the
Education Development Center (EDC) in partnership with iEARN, World
Links and the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI).
In December this year, the teachers from Sana'a and Aden will begin
12-week online courses for further instruction in collaborative
project-based learning. They will work with their students -- reaching
out to more than 5,000 girls and boys -- to implement online projects
in various subject areas. iEARN will run the online courses in English
and Arabic to facilitate participation from other schools in Yemen, the
Middle East region and the US.
For more information about the project or to partner with Yemeni schools, please write to anindita@us.iearn.org
The Young Scientists Tsunami Collaboration
Students in Four Countries Examine Tsunamis Online as Youth Scientists:
The Young Scientists Tsunami Collaboration is a project which involves
students in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and the United States.
Funded by the United States Oceans Bureau of the US Department of
State and US embassies abroad, the project focuses on the science of
tsunamis, including the role of science and technology in disaster
relief, preparedness efforts and examinations of the effects of
tsunamis on the environment. The project strengthens the scientific and
technological capabilities of youth in these countries while promoting
cooperation in areas of mutual interest for peaceful purposes. The
project will be conducted in two parts. In the first, iEARN will create
a new, specific online professional development course to provide
expertise and support for science teachers involved in this initiative.
The course will go into depth on how to use different types of
technologies to enable students to interact. After completing the
course, educators in the four countries will involve their students in
direct interaction online with peers in the other participating
countries. Together they will develop an activity together
related to the science of tsunami on which to work collaboratively with
their students across the globe.
IEARN-USA
is currently recruiting interested American high school science
teachers to work with peers in Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. The
language of the project will be English. This project may be factored
into science and geography classes or be implemented as an after school
& community program. The results of the project will be
presented by teachers at the July 2006 iEARN International Conference
in the Netherlands.
