The Young Scientists Tsunami Collaboration is a project which focuses on the science of tsunamis, including the role of science and technology in disaster relief, preparedness efforts and examinations of the effects of tsunamis on the environment. Involving students from the affected region and countries around the world, the project aims to strengthen the scientific and technological capabilities of youth involved while promoting cooperation in areas of mutual interest for peaceful purposes.

Funded by the United States Oceans Bureau of the US Department of State, the project will be run based on the Learning Circle approach to online collaborative learning. Teachers will create and conduct with their classes projects related to the science of tsunamis, and also work to establish their projects with other teachers in their school, their country, and around the world!  The LC will begin in early September and run for ten weeks.

IEARN-USA is currently recruiting interested US high school science teachers to work on this project. This project may be factored into science and geography classes or be implemented as an after school & community program.

If interested, please contact Tina Habib, Director of Government Programs or call (212) 870-2693. Visit a website created by students of Thailand for the Tsunami Project.  (Pictured above: students next to a pole measuring the height of a tidal wave at 6 meters high).

Project Spotlight
The Teddy Bear Project Reaches High School Students: August 12, 2006 - It's always amazing when several iEARN projects overlap and youth are able to experience the best of iEARN projects.  Students from high schools around New York City not only participate in YouthCaN - an iEARN project empowering youth to use technology to increase environmental awareness - but also are engaged with a teddy bear exchange with a secondary school in Japan, Nanryo High School in Saitama.  The picture shows YouthCaN students with their bear, Minami, on a Hike the World trip to Inwood Hill Park in Manhattan.  The students were taking video of the Hudson River area to share with their Two Rivers, One World partners in Egypt, another iEARN Project.  The spot where the picture is taken has a plaque commemorating the sale of Manhattan Island by the Canarsie Indians to the Dutch governor Peter Minuit  in 1626.

Solar Cooking In Afghanistan: In 2005, students from Miami Country Day in Florida presented their iEARN Solar Cooking Project at the US State Department, as part of Earth Day.  During the presentation, a Miami Country Day student spent time with the head of the Afghanistan Reach Back Office at the Pentagon.  As a result, solar cooking will reach Afghanistan in November 2006.

Rowena Gerber, lead iEARN teacher at Miami Country Day, receives help and information from Sun Ovens International, an Illinois based company that produces solar ovens.  This November, Sun Oven's President - Paul Munsen will be visiting Afghanistan to deliver 3 village solar ovens and 200 global sun ovens for a pilot project.  Learn more about the Solar Cooking and join this wonderful project!!

The project has gained momentum and includes many participates worldwide including youth in Pakistan and Iran.  Also, a recent video was made highlighting project work for this year's YouthCaN Conference in New York City. Teacher Resources

TakingITGlobal welcomes iEARN members to try out TIGed.org: online tools designed to help educators bring global issues into the classroom. Using TIGed, teachers create and moderate virtual classrooms where students can interact, collaborate, and share their work in a secure space while harnessing the power of TakingITGlobal’s online community and global youth perspectives. Teachers have access to a database of peer-reviewed, standards-linked activities and resources. TIGed also features curriculum resources developed in partnership with other educational organizations, and a collaboration registry where teachers can post their ideas and search for partner classrooms.

Please visit www.tiged.org for more information and details on how to sign up. iEARN Teachers who wish to join may use the promotional code IEARN2006 to receive one year of free access to TIGed.
