"Japan is a beautiful and peaceful country. The people are respectful, helpful, and very kind and considerate. Our trip focused on natural disasters, especially earthquakes that could hit Japan as well as the tsunami. Students worked together in cooperative groups to research the Mihama facility to locate safe places and unsafe places at the facility inside or outside in the event of an earthquake or a tsunami. I was amazed at how well the students worked together although they were from different countries representing a variety of cultural differences and language barriers. Kids are amazing, they meet these challenges and keep on working. They did fantastic presentations in front of their peers, visitors, and teachers.
The NDYS disaster site maps were presented by each country and they were very detailed. I believe the next generation of students involved in this project will be well prepared in the event of a natural disaster. It was an honor to meet Wizera from Indonesia. She is a young lady who survived the Tsunami and Banda Aichi in Indonesia. She lost her mother and brother in the tsunami and I am amazed at her inner strength and energy to make people aware of the danger in being unprepared for a natural disaster. Although she has suffered trauma in her life at such a tender age, she is a source of great strength and a strong leader for her peers...
The International Snack party was quite interesting. I never knew there was such a variety of snacks in the world. It was a bonanza! Students and teachers removed wrappers from the snacks and we had to choose the 5 best snacks to include in our emergency disaster kit. Surprisingly, the students chose the best snacks that were healthy and appropriate for an emergency...
School visits were very interesting. We visited kindergarten through high school classes and enjoyed our visits and lunch with elementary students. There were nine different countries represented at NDYS and we all became close friends in a very short time period."
