Inside View - An Urban Student
Magazine
| Inside View - An Urban Student Magazine
is a project in which students edit and publish
a magazine with the goal of expressing the differences
and similarities of people around the world by showing
their ethnic beauty. "Inside View" seeks
to decrease prejudice, increase understanding and
promote unity among teens and adults with different
religions, and racial and ethnic backgrounds. The
annual print publication draws from discussions
such as the one below that take place year round
on the project's online forum. |

Mix It Up
Hello Insiders,
( If i can call you all that ) My name is Michael (
yes again ).
You know, the 16 Year old from New York City ( NYC ).
I am very interested in mixing up cultures, for instance
Me. I
am what some people might call 'Nuyorican' , no it is
not a country, but
it is an identity, a culture.
In new york city there are many, many, many cultures.
we have Hasidic
Jews, Hispanics (Dominicans, Puertoricans, Cubans, Colombians,
Mexicans,
and more ethnicities that i choose not to name ) Black
People ( or to be
Politically Correct: African-Americans ), White People
( politically
correct terms: Caucasians, Euro-Americans ) etc.
I am of Puertorican Descent, but i have little Puertorican
Culture,
but I am also New York American. I am Human First, American
second, and
Puertorican third. That is where i derived 'Nuyorican'
from, Nuyo- is
from New Yo' ,and -rican is from Puertorican .
I am part black from previous generations. See Puerto
Rico was one of
the places where the African Slaves were shipped of
to, and sold to
others. Of course the Africans brought over some of
there culture. That
mixed in with some of the Native's cultures, and with
the Spanish
conquest, we have a lot of Spanish culture mixed in
aswell.
And as many people and cultures from around the world,
many people
came to the US of A, for what ever reason, and that
mixed in some
American/Puritan/Anglo Saxon Cultures.
And in New York City you have a somewhat different culture
than the rest
of the country, that just adds more stuf into the Mix.
As a teenager I am trying real hard to try to indentify
myself. I have
found out that i am influnced by many Cultures, and
peoples. I think one
should be proud of their identity.
Nuyorican is what I am , I think?
I would like to know what cultures influence your identity.
Is there any Mixing of cultures and/or races?
Anything about your culture or indentity that yuo are
proud of or think
is amazing?
Write in to the Conference.
Keep the telecommnication flowing,
Hi,
My name is Leinz Vales from Brooklyn, New York.
Even though my nationality is Haitian, and I call myself
a Black youth.
You can see that I have a set identity, that I share
with my parents.
All the time I find myself looking for another identity
that I can
belong to. I feel that all these other nationalities
and cultures are so
great and have a lot to offer, that I feel the need
to learn a language,
cook some food, or talk to some one from a different
background than I
am.
I am the only one who feels this way, Do you long for
belonging to
different cultures?
Imagine you were made up of all the different nationalities
in the
world. Okay you would have an identity problem, but
you would be made up
of fantistic cultures.
You would be a global Kid!
